Pasture and Optiweigh Demonstration Field Day - Petwood (Cattle)
Are you a primary producer looking to boost profitability while navigating on-farm emissions?
Designed for livestock producers, this on-farm session will provide practical livestock and pasture management information and the ability to see the Optiweigh cattle unit in paddock.
Hear from:
Cam Nicolson, a highly respected Victorian agronomist, who will share his insights on integrating new practices on farm to boost profitability while focusing on sustainability and navigating on-farm emissions. With emissions reporting on the horizon, Cam will share practical experience in using Optiweigh and discuss other options to reduce on-farm emissions.
Adam Krahnert, a passionate, local agronomist from Coopers Farm Supplies, will provide a regional perspective and share his trail information on pasture management and soil health. This will include:
- the benefits of different pasture species,
- soil comparisons between monoculture, annual multi-species, and long-term perennial systems, and
- how pasture choices influence productivity and sustainability.
What is an Optiweigh?
Optiweigh is a portable, automatic livestock weighing system that allows farmers to passively collect weight data directly in the paddock with no need to bring animals into the yards.
How it works:
- Livestock are enticed into the weighing crate using a supplement
- Their electronic ID tags are scanned
- Weight data is captured and transmitted to a secure cloud platform
- Producers can access real-time insights anytime, anywhere
This hands-off approach enables more frequent, accurate data collection with minimal labour, helping you track growth rates, optimise management decisions and improve overall herd performance.
Morning tea and lunch provided.
This project is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Natural Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program.
