Understanding Farm Carbon Training Webinar with Prof. Richard Eckard

Southbank VIC 3006

Greenhouse gas (GHG) management is rapidly becoming a key focus in agriculture. In this webinar, leading carbon farming expert Professor Richard Eckard will explore the global and national trends shaping emissions management in dairy and what they mean for farmers and the wider dairy industry.

The webinar will then move to the farm level, exploring the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions in dairy systems and what a typical farm emissions profile looks like. Richard will explain how farm greenhouse gas accounts are built and how emissions are measured and reported.

The session will then focus on practical pathways to reduce emissions. This includes understanding the key gases in dairy systemsenteric methane and nitrous oxideand what management actions may help reduce emissions intensity or total farm emissions. The session will also introduce the concepts of insetting and offsetting, and how emerging supply-chain models may help fund on-farm emissions reduction.

About the presenter

Richard Eckard is Professor of Carbon Farming at the University of Melbourne and science leader in the Zero Net Emissions Agriculture Cooperative Research Centre. He developed the first greenhouse gas accounting tools for Australian agriculture and advises governments and organisations including the International Livestock Research Institute and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on climate change, mitigation and agricultural policy.
