South Australian Dairy Farmers Association
The South Australian Dairyfarmers Association (SADA) has proudly served as the peak representative body for South Australian dairy farmers since 1936. With a clear mandate to advocate for the needs and interests of its members, SADA plays a critical role in shaping agricultural policy and ensuring dairy farmers have a strong voice at both state and federal levels. Through its affiliation with Australian Dairy Farmers Ltd, SADA also contributes to national advocacy on key industry issues.
SADA works closely with the South Australian Government, local councils, and key policymakers to influence decisions that impact the dairy sector. Whether it’s negotiating on electricity pricing, advocating for improved animal health and welfare standards, or contributing to natural resource and water management policy, SADA ensures the concerns and priorities of dairy farmers are heard at the highest levels of government. By maintaining trusted relationships with ministers, departments, and parliamentary committees, SADA positions the dairy industry as a proactive and solutions-focused stakeholder in South Australia’s broader agricultural landscape.
Dairysafe
Dairysafe is an independent statutory authority established on 1 July 1993 and fully funded by the South Australian dairy industry. Operating under the Primary Produce (Food Safety Schemes) Act 2004 and accompanying Dairy Regulations, Dairysafe is governed by three Members appointed by the Governor, including a Chairperson. A dedicated team of administrators and auditors oversee the safe production of dairy products across the state, ensuring strict compliance with Australian food safety standards (FSANZ) through regular accreditation and auditing of dairy farmers, milk transporters, and processors. Dairysafe also plays a vital role in supporting the industry in managing food safety issues, such as responding to bacterial outbreaks, to maintain the integrity of South Australia’s dairy supply.
Dairysafe works with a wide range of producers across the dairy sector, from large-scale cow’s milk operations to smaller buffalo, goat, and sheep milk producers, including those engaged in organic and biodynamic production. Accredited businesses span the full dairy spectrum—from packaged milk, yoghurt, and butter to pharmaceuticals and specialty products. The organisation’s approach is collaborative, working closely with each business to ensure safe production practices tailored to their operations. In addition to its regulatory responsibilities, Dairysafe also advises the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development on matters relating to dairy food safety, contributing to informed policy and robust public health outcomes.
Primary Producers South Australia
Primary Producers South Australia (PPSA) serves as the peak industry body representing the interests of South Australian primary producers, acting as a unified voice to government and the wider community on cross-commodity issues. As the South Australian member of the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF), PPSA ensures that the state’s primary producers are actively engaged in national agricultural discussions and initiatives. The organization’s vision is to foster a strong and viable primary production sector in South Australia, one that is valued by both government and the community. PPSA collaborates with government and industry stakeholders to develop policies and programs that promote the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of primary production in the state.
PPSA’s structure includes a Board of Management and a Policy Council that work together to set strategic priorities and develop policies addressing cross-commodity issues such as risk resilience, export enhancement, regional development, biosecurity, productivity, and sustainability. The organization also operates several committees, including those focused on natural resource management, transport and supply chains, bushfire management, and work health and safety. Through these structures, PPSA influences policy deliberations and advocates for the needs of primary producers at both state and national levels.

Dairy Australia
Dairy Australia serves as the national services body for the Australian dairy industry, dedicated to fostering a profitable and sustainable sector. Established in 2003, the organisation delivers a broad spectrum of services aimed at enhancing farm business management, supporting workforce development, advancing herd and feed innovation, and promoting environmental sustainability. Operating through eight regional teams across the country, Dairy Australia ensures that its initiatives are tailored to the specific needs of local dairy communities, thereby driving industry growth and resilience.
Funded by levies paid by dairy farm businesses and matching contributions from the Commonwealth Government for eligible research and development activities, Dairy Australia plays a pivotal role in the industry’s advancement. The organisation’s governance structure includes a Board responsible for overseeing strategy, investment, and performance to meet the evolving needs of dairy farm businesses and the broader industry. Through its commitment to innovation and collaboration, Dairy Australia continues to support the Australian dairy sector in navigating challenges and seizing opportunities for sustainable growth.
Dairy Industry Association of Australia
The Dairy Industry Association of Australia (DIAA) is a national not-for-profit organisation representing professionals in dairy product manufacturing and allied trades. Formed in 1986 through the amalgamation of the Australian Dairy Institute and the Australian Society of Dairy Technology, the DIAA has a long-standing commitment to supporting the professional development of its members. Its mission is to provide a forum for communication, continuing education, professional growth, recognition, and fellowship across all sectors of the dairy industry. The association operates through state-based branches managed by volunteer committees, ensuring regional representation and engagement. Each year, the DIAA National President sets a theme to guide the organisation’s direction, which is embraced by all state branches in their annual conferences and events.
The DIAA offers a range of services to its members, including networking opportunities, technical learning, product competitions, and publications. Notably, the association publishes the “Australian Dairy Foods” magazine, which has been a key source of industry news and information since 1979. This publication covers a wide array of topics, from the latest innovations and new products to industry statistics and market updates. Additionally, the DIAA hosts annual National and State dairy product competitions, providing entrants with commercial benefits and recognition. Through these initiatives, the DIAA continues to support the Australian dairy industry by fostering knowledge exchange, professional development, and industry.
Australian Dairy Products Federation
The Australian Dairy Products Federation (ADPF) serves as the peak policy and advocacy body for the post-farm-gate sector of the Australian dairy industry. Established nearly 40 years ago, ADPF represents over 90% of Australia’s total milk pool, encompassing dairy processors, traders, brokers, and marketers. The organisation is entirely funded and operated by its members, with senior leaders from member organisations forming its Executive Team. ADPF collaborates closely with other Australian dairy industry bodies, such as the Australian Dairy Industry Council, to advance the entire industry.
ADPF is committed to ensuring the Australian dairy industry remains competitive both domestically and internationally. The federation advocates for policies that support the industry’s sustainability, productivity, and global competitiveness. For instance, ADPF has released policy priorities urging the Australian Government to develop and fund a Dairy Industry Success Strategy, provide scholarships to train the next generation of dairy processors, and support initiatives that empower dairy processors towards net-zero emissions. These efforts aim to safeguard the future success of dairy processors, marketers, and farmers, ensuring the continued delivery of world-class dairy products to consumers.
Australian Dairy Farmers
Australian Dairy Farmers (ADF) is the national advocacy body representing dairy farmers across Australia’s six dairying states. Established in 1942 as the Australian Dairy Farmers Federation, ADF has evolved to become a unified voice for the industry, aiming to improve the profitability and sustainability of dairy farming nationwide. The organization addresses key issues such as trade, water management, carbon policies, milk pricing, and animal health and welfare. Through its collaborative efforts with government, industry stakeholders, and the community, ADF strives to ensure that dairy farmers’ interests are effectively represented and advanced.
ADF’s structure includes a Board, National Council, six State Dairy Farmer Organisation (SDFO) members, and five Policy Advisory Groups (PAGs). These entities work together to develop and implement policies that support the dairy sector’s growth and resilience. ADF collaborates closely with the Australian Dairy Products Federation (ADPF) under the umbrella of the Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC), promoting a whole-of-industry approach to policy and advocacy. Additionally, ADF is a major shareholder in DataGene, an organization focused on improving Australian Breeding Values through genomics, reflecting ADF’s commitment to innovation and the future of the national dairy herd.
National Farmers Federation
The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) serves as Australia’s peak national body representing farmers and the broader agricultural sector. Established in 1979, the NFF has been instrumental in unifying various agricultural organizations to advocate for policies that benefit Australian agriculture. Its mission is to lead Australian agriculture by influencing policy, enhancing public confidence in the farming sector, and fostering a skilled and committed team to drive progress. The NFF’s vision encompasses being a trusted and recognized voice, delivering outstanding member value through a unified approach, and growing the national economic, social, and environmental value of the industry.
To achieve its objectives, the NFF operates through seven committees and one taskforce, which are central to its policy development and advocacy efforts. These include the Climate & Energy Taskforce, Economic Policy & Farm Business Committee, Farming Systems Committee, Sustainable Development Committee, Telecommunications & Social Policy Committee, Trade Committee, and Water Committee. Each committee focuses on specific areas critical to Australian agriculture, facilitating evidence-based, democratic policy formation driven by farmers. By engaging directly with its members and stakeholders, the NFF ensures that its policies and initiatives are grounded in the practical realities of farming and aligned with the sector’s long-term interests.
